AND Give Thanks

November 20th, 2016

With all that is going on in our country and the world at large, it is an especially good time to remember AND. These three little letters form a word that can literally shift us out of anxiety into hope. The reason is quite simple.

The beauty of AND is that it allows us to name what we are experiencing, however painful or concerning, AND to also shift our focus to what else is true that we want to create in our lives, with others, and for the world. We can hold both as true. Instead of resisting whatever is painful or rocking our world, we remind ourselves to acknowledge it AND shift our focus to something more powerful, more worthy of our talents and energy.

So in this week where we celebrate Thanksgiving, I find myself focusing on giving thanks. Truly giving thanks means pausing to ask what, in our lives, we are most grateful for, what do we appreciate, and what gifts grace our lives in different ways each day. AND by shifting to focus on all that is going well and filling our lives with love and light, we become gifts of light to those we touch, helping them to shift their focus to the gifts in their lives.

Whether in our families, with friends, or in our communities, there is much to celebrate. AND giving thanks is a gift we not only give ourselves. It is also a gift we give others to create a world where we collectively shine light, create possibilities, seize opportunities, and share the beauty in our world.

This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for a loving family, amazing friends, beautiful sunrises, the moon and the stars, quiet moments on the beach, shared smiles with neighbors, inspiring work, the beauty I find in others’ kindness and nature, and a country where we are free to live the values that welcome all to the table. AND for all this and more I give thanks.

AND I wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving.
