AND Honor the Fathers In Our Lives

June 19th, 2016

A wise man came to visit me this week. He asked for nothing and appreciated everything. He shared stories and reflections. He basked in the beauty of whatever each moment presented. He relished a walk on the beach. He watched the sun set and the sailboat on the water.

He appreciated a great meal AND a good laugh. He would sit mesmerized at the table, watching the sun dance on the water. AND found just as much delight watching the birds fly in and out of the birdhouse.

He lives in the moment, with gratitude for all that is working in his life. He delights in sharing life with family and friends. He appreciates each special moment, person, or occasion for the unique gifts each brings.

He knows the value of simplicity and what is real. Beauty, in all its forms, is to be celebrated. A walk on the beach to see the newly hatched plovers is precious. The opportunity to share the story when he returns is precious, too. He sees life as precious.

This wise man is my Dad. AND I am grateful for every moment shared, for the wonderful teacher he is, and for the wisdom he lives so naturally. Fathers are special teachers in our lives. For some of us the lessons are insights into how to age gracefully, form great relationships, or live from gratitude. For others, the lessons may be as much about what to do to live life to the fullest or what not to do.

On this Father’s Day, we have the opportunity to love and honor the fathers in our lives. I, for one, will not miss the opportunity to say thank you, I’m grateful for all you are and all you teach me, AND thank you for being my Dad.

Happy Father’s Day to all who have chosen to serve as fathers, guides, and teachers in our lives.
