AND Remember Why They Gave So Much

May 29th, 2016

It’s that time of year again when the flags fly high, parades fill small towns, people put fresh flowers on cemetery memorials, and we pause to honor those who have given so much to serve a country’s ideals. The land of the free and the home of the brave are the words that ring out in our national anthem. AND we, who live today, stand on the shoulders of those who came before and fought to ensure that such a homeland might exist for all in the future.

As so many flee their homes around the world, may we open our hearts to understand what they face. As our soldiers around the world, and especially in the Middle East, continue to fight terrorist insurgencies so that we can create a world where peace may reign, may we be grateful for their courage and commitment. As wounded veterans return to the country that sent them to fight, may we take up the mantle for patience and compassion for those dealing with emotional and physical traumas caused by war, as they learn to adjust to the ravages of war on their lives.

AND, as we look to the future, may we find ways to work together to make peace, instead of war. May we prioritize patience, compassion, and listening over control, domination, and force in rebuilding societies that embrace different cultures, religions, and peoples. AND without judging decisions of the past, may we also remember the ideals for which soldiers have fought.

Happy Memorial Day and thank you to all the veterans who have served our country and to the women and men of our armed forces today.
