AND Celebrate Thanks Giving

November 22nd, 2015

As we pause from our daily work schedules, errands, and myriad other distractions to celebrate Thanksgiving this week, it is worth noting what most would deem the traditional aspects of this holiday.

First, there is the shared meal. With any luck, technology will be put aside for people to engage in personal conversation, while sharing a meal together. Then there is the conscious intention to express gratitude for the gifts and blessings in our lives creates a time of reflection and appreciation for all that is going right in our lives. We pause to say thank you for all that we have, instead of falling prey to the media-induced focus on buying and having more, focusing on all that is not going well in the world.

Thanksgiving reminds us to include neighbors and friends in family gatherings, and to donate to food banks and organizations that provide care and meals to those less fortunate among us. Thanksgiving meals feed the stomachs and souls of the less fortunate because we pause to see beyond what we have to those who have less.

One of the special gifts of Thanksgiving is that we consciously pause to reflect on all the blessings in our lives. Perhaps just as special is that we celebrate the act of giving thanks. We set aside a time for giving thanks and we call that time a time of celebration.

On Thanksgiving, we choose to celebrate the blessings and abundance in our lives and seek to share those blessings with others. No hoarding. No competition. Just gratitude, open hearts, and the desire to welcome everyone into this moment. Thanksgiving is indeed a time of celebration and gratitude for the people, joys, precious moments, kindnesses, and myriad other blessings that grace our lives and the lives of those we love.

AND that is worth celebrating. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
